A question often posed by people seeking to enter the blogging scene is whether or not to appeal to the masses, or to a select group of people who may be seeking out your material. Often enough though, this is an important question for game developers to consider in the early stages of their own development. In many ways the question has many of the same pro’s and cons as it does in the blogging world. Focusing your material to a select group of people means that you can tailor your content specifically to people who will most likely appreciate it most (as long as you’ve done your homework), while taking a broad approach to appeal to everyone means that your player base may actually be a bit larger.

Get Your Niche On

The biggest advantage as mentioned above is that targeting your game to a specific niche allows you to focus specifically on one or two groups of people. This not only allows you to direct your content specifically, but it lets you focus your talents where they may be the strongest. For example, if you’re an aspiring Indie Developer and you’re interested in developing an MMORPG, but don’t have the ability to devote much to 3D work, focusing your direction on a niche would allow you to potentially develop the game for people who prefer isometric style gameplay instead. Additionally, if you’re weakness is in highly complex animations and player versus player combat, and yet you wish to develop an immersive 3D environment, you may wish to target a group of people who do not prefer player versus player fighting.

The best example of a successful and widely known niche style game is the Myst series. Myst appealed specifically to people who were:

1. Interested in beautiful game scenery and graphics

2. Interested in solving ridiculously hard puzzles

3. Interested in an immersive storyline

Myst in many ways was one of the first main stream examples of a niche game that ended up becoming so successful that it spilled out and appealed to people interested in *other* genres. Unfortunately, the trickiest part of creating a niche game is similar to creating a niche blog: figuring out the niche you’re intending to appeal to, and deciding whether or not there’s a viable market for your nichey game. In your quest to discover your niche gaming setting Wikipedia is actually an incredibly valuable source for genre hunting. For instance, if you’re interested in “Fantasy”, search that term and see what kind of information comes up. Often times at the bottom of a Wikipedia post, there’s additional information about similar areas of information.

Diversify, Diversify… Diversify?

For as many people that believe in tackling game production by targeting a niche, there are just as many who believe that diversifying is the only option when it comes to targeting users. The philosophy goes something like this: The best way to get the most people to play your game is to appeal to as many people as possible. What’s the point of focusing on a small group of people, if that only limits the amount of people who will play your game? Many games today go the route of diversifying and avoiding the niche issue. The biggest difficulty in this approach is that more often than not it takes a larger development studio with deeper pockets to:

1. Advertise the game and give it enough exposure

2. Continuously develop the game in enough ways to continue to appeal to the varied groups of people playing it

3. Hire a staff large enough to develop a game that stretches out in all directions in order to appeal to all of those players.

Games that seek to diversify their activities are a dime a dozen recently, some examples of such games are World of Warcraft, EVE Online, and countless others.

Ultimately there are many, many advantages and disadvantages to either approach to game development. Neither solution is the be all-end all solution, but each provides different options based on the means of the development studio working on the project. A team that has limited funds and resources would more often than not do better to appeal to a niche than the masses. Likewise, large game studios will most likely do better in appealing to the masses, as there will be more potential players to fuel the continued development of the game. Can the two cross paths? Naturally!

If you feel we’ve left important information out of this post, please let us know! We’re interested in your feed back. In the future we would like to provide readers with quite a few examples of both niche games, and diverse style games. Until then, read on!

For playing network and computer games, gaming desktops are the best since they are optimized for displaying graphics (as opposed to regular desktops, which are optimized for storage). This is because a lot of gaming media is being read from removable drives. The best feature of the gaming desktop is their graphics card that ensures smooth frame rates and perfect video quality. These desktops are also equipped with bigger RAM and faster hard drives compared to your regular desktop computer.

Kinds

There are two types of gaming desktops: the pre-built and the custom-built.

The prebuilt gaming desktop: They are in pre-assembled cases that already include a motherboard, processor, and the necessary sounds and graphics cards. They may also come with different input and output devices necessary for plug-and-play of gaming controls like game pads and joysticks. Other controllers may also be connected like the wheel for racing games. They are more expensive compared to custom-built ones but are easier to set up.

The custom-built gaming desktop: This includes the basic components like the processor and the motherboard, but you can easily assemble and customize them based on what you need in a gaming desktop. They also let you add more peripherals and components. While they are commonly cheaper than pre-built ones, they typically require more skills and set-up time in your part.

Buying your gaming desktop

If you are looking for a gaming desktop, you need to check on its ventilation and upgrading options.

Gaming desktops are usually easy to be upgraded and you can easily add components into them, too. Look for one that has standard ports like the USB 2.0 to ensure that it is highly compatible with different kinds of add-ons like new hardware and controllers.

Ventilation is important for a gaming desktop to avoid overheating and damage. Check for enough fans or vents.

The gaming laptop is coming of age! It is steadily

increasing in popularity as performance quality goes

up. Gamers now regularly consider laptops or notebooks

when searching for that perfect gaming machine.

With each new generation of notebooks we are seeing some

novel breakthroughs: dual core notebooks, PCI Express,

Sonoma chipset, increased storage, increased RAM, faster

CPUs, better battery life and better wireless connections

including a Cellular Modem. All welcome news for gamers

and notebook lovers alike.

Generally, gamers are a very demanding group, they know

their computers and they know what they want in their

computers. Most gamers like to order their gaming laptop

with their own specs and configurations. In that light,

if you closely examine the main points gamers consider

when configuring or building their Dream Machine — you will

have a good blueprint for the best gaming machine.

Since notebook technology changes every two years or so,

it’s probably wise to purchase a laptop that can be easily

upgraded as new products come on line. So consider the

upgradable factor in any notebook that you plan to buy.

Now, lets look at some of these key gaming factors:

GRAPHICS

You must have the best/latest/fastest Graphics on the market. DUH!

Serious gamers are concerned with graphics, obsessed would probably

be a better word. And rightly so! Graphics or the quality of the

graphic chipset in your notebook computer will be your first area

of consideration and it will greatly determine the gaming performance

of your PC.

Go with the latest Graphic Chipset and also check to see if you

can upgrade your Graphics Card on the particular machine

you’re thinking about buying. Many machines allow this.

Here are some Graphic Chipsets that are highly rated: ATi Mobility

Radeon 9700, ATI’s Mobility FireGL V3200 or Intel’s Graphics Media

Accelerator 900.

ATi Mobility Radeon 9700 is a high quality Graphics Card or visual

processing unit (VPU) present in many next generation notebooks. It

will give you higher performance at a lower power level, saving

battery power.

It makes your notebook computer capable of many functions: 3D games,

wide-screen HDTV, dynamic presentations, mobile video editing studio

and graphic processor.

Many notebooks now come with integrated graphics, where components

interact and are sometimes shared, especially memory. If you want

a notebook computer for 3D games — check the amount of video RAM —

this is memory that’s dedicated to graphic or video applications.

Other common graphic chipsets are: STMicro, NVIDIA, 3D Labs, Matrox,

Trident S3 and SIS.

RAM

Get the largest amount of RAM possible. DUDE!

RAM or random-access memory will determine how much graphics

your notebook computer will be able to handle. It’s best to

get the largest amount possible on your machine or what you

can afford.

It’s generally agreed that you need at least 256MB for

Windows XP and Mac OS X. You will only need 128MB for other

operating systems in Windows or Mac.

RAM or the amount of RAM on your notebook computer is extremely

important if you want to handle heavy graphic files or want to play

games on your notebook. The more RAM you have, the more applications

you will be able to handle. Some notebook now come with up to 2GB

of DDR2 533MHz RAM!

DDR2 SDRAM – is a new standard that can boost conventional SDRAM

memory up to speeds well over 200MHz and beyond. For example, the

IBM ThinkPad T43, thanks to the Sonoma Chipset or platform has

533MHz DDR 2 SDRAM.

This is much better than standard SDRAM which tops out around 150-

166MHz and DDR SDRAM which starts at 200MHz and goes up to around

400MHz.

Video RAM or VRAM is special memory that’s used by video adapters on

your notebook. This is RAM that is dedicated to handling the visuals and

graphics on your notebook computer. This is helpful if you want to play

a lot of the latest 3D video games on your notebook.

It is somewhat different from ordinary RAM because it can be

accessed by two different devices at once — enabling screen updates

while the video processor processes new data. VRAM provides better

graphics but is more expensive than ordinary RAM.

SPEED

You need the fastest computer money can buy. Period!

In order to get the maximum performance from your ultimate

gaming computer you must have the fastest speed you can get

or afford. Your ultimate PC must be able to process and handle

the latest 3D video games with ease. There is nothing as annoying

as your PC freezing up in the middle of some major gaming action!

Therefore, your Processor’s speed is very important.

CPU or Central Processing Unit, you probably know it as

the processor! It’s the heart or rather the brain of your

notebook or computer. It does all your computer’s data processing and applications. Since it does most of the work, it’s usually the most expensive part of your notebook computer.

Go with SATA!

SATA is a type of hard drive and stands for Serial Advanced Technology

Architecture. It was developed by a whole group of companies including

Seagate, Intel, Maxtor, Dell and others. SATA transmit data in a serially

(in a single stream) as opposed to PATA or Parallel ATA which is commonly

referred to as an IDE hard drive.

Serial ATA hard drives uses less power and are ideal for notebook

computers, they are also more advanced than PATA hard drives which

uses multipe streams of data — go figure! But Serial Technology carries

data in a single stream and unlike PATA is not limited to a particular

clock speed, Serial transfers data packets almost 30 times faster than

parallel.

If top performance in your notebook is one of your goals, go with a SATA

hard drive.

Intel Pentium M processors are commonly found in a lot of

notebooks and laptops. When in doubt also go with a Pentium!

The speed of microprocessors is measured in MHz.

MHz is short for megahertz. One MHz equals one million cycles

per second. The speed of processors, usually known as clock speed,

is measured in megahertz (MHz) or these days in gigahertz (GHz).

The higher the clock speed, the faster the computer will process

applications and data. It determines how powerful your notebook

computer will be. Processor speeds for notebooks or laptops are

steadily increasing, not quite the same as a desktop but the gap

is narrowing quickly. Speeds of 3.4GHz or more.

Don’t forget to ask or check the hard drive speed! A 7,200rpm hard

drive is faster than a 4,200rpm or 5,400rpm and usually gives better

performance.

DISPLAY

You need the sharpest, brightest display screen or all the above

points are moot!

Display quality is also extremely important to your gaming

experience. Make sure the resolution and display quality of

your notebook computer can handle the graphics for 3D Gaming.

What to keep in mind…

SVGA Resolution. Put simply, computer images are made up of

dots, the more dots you have — the better the image.

SVGA Resolution is made up of 800 x 600 dots.

Many notebook computer have XGA (1024 by 768 dots) or

SXGA (1280 x 1024 dots), these resolutions will give

a higher quality image. WXGA stands for widescreen XGA.

TFT Active Matrix Display. TFT stands for thin-film

transistors and many high-end notebook computers use

(TFT) active matrix liquid crystal displays.

If display quality is your main reason for buying

a notebook, it’s best to give it the ‘old eye test’

and check out the image quality first-hand and decide

for yourself. Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, and others

are known for their high quality monitors — this

quality is also present in their notebook display

screens.

So when buying your perfect Gaming Notebook Remember This:

Graphics + Ram + Speed + Display = Perfect Gaming Notebook

Consider all of the above factors before you buy or config

your perfect gaming machine. Chances are high that you

will get a top-notch quality Gaming Notebook that will

give you hours and hours of pure gaming bliss!

An interesting diversity in the gaming world of Britain has become apparent over the last couple of weeks. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ has clinched first place as the best selling game in the UK for two weeks now, even triumphing over hugely successful ‘Modern Warfare 2.’

‘Just Dance’, a very active game involving exactly what you would expect from reading the title, came out eight weeks ago and has made its way slowly up the charts. With a cyber-generated dance coach to mimic, the game hopes to transform the player into a real dancer and with sensory technology, is much more advanced than the slightly dated ‘floor sensor’ dance games.

Last week it finally won the top spot over ‘Modern Warfare 2′, even though this endless army gunfight made a massive impact on its first day of release, selling 4.7 million copies worldwide. ‘Just Dance’ is incidentally Ubisoft’s first game to hold the top place for two weeks in a row since the original Assassins Creed.

‘Wii Fit Plus’ and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ also made the top five and this could indicate that there has been a real shift in the market in the video game world. Elsewhere on the chart, new entry ‘Dark Void’ from Capcom, a thrilling sci-fi adventure claims a distinguished 33rd in its first week of sale.

As new technology has emerged, transforming the inactive solitary games to energetic, group activities, it looks like the family is now willing to buy and play them.

Exercise is the fashionable incentive for these new consumers. So, therefore, the previously limited gaming market of teenage males looking for an outlet for their blood-lust has noticeably widened. Active games appeal to a more substantial group, as do ones involving music and dance, which all, crucially, appeal to female gamers.

This change has certainly manifested on the selling charts but the situation on is entirely different. Hollywood hit ‘Avatar’ has made its way onto both charts, the game version of the film reaching 8th on the selling chart and 16th on the Blockbuster games and DVD rental site.

Gamesfrenzy and Gamesmonster show game charts, however, with a remarkable drift towards classic violence. ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ is at the top of both of these charts and ‘Left 4 Dead 2′ – another zombie-filled horror piece- in second place.

Boomerang rentals also sees these traditional and often violent games topping their ‘most rented’ chart, including ‘Gears of War 2′ and ‘Ghostbusters the Video Game.’ But it is questionable whether this difference means that ’selling’ and ‘renting’ attract separate groups or whether are not exploiting the new game genres and their respective buyers.

While those that compare games rental websites are usually so-called ‘hardcore gamers’ the Wii widely advertises to these new markets, usually showing scenes of games being played in domestic harmony, so the campaign is definitely being covered from the selling side.

However, it looks like gaming and DVD rental websites have failed so far to pounce on this recent surge, their charts perhaps signifying a gap in their marketing. As the games industry explores new genres and approaches new markets, game rental sites will be forced to adapt themselves to attract these new consumers.

Emily Gorton is a staff writer for the ChooseDVDrental site where users can use tools to compare DVD rental. Site users can also compare game rental sites using the service.

Retro gaming and old school gaming are coming back to life. why do owners of today’s technology want to play the kind of games that an elastic band could power. The rise of casual gaming is part responsible.

Online video game Websites now offer the choice of old and new games which make it easier for the retro gamer to buy older console and computer classics. These websites are also useful to buy accessories. Backlists haven’t always been so easily available.

Even for Console owners, though, the experience of of playing Super Mario Bros. in the era of the Gamecube could only be achieved by hunting down a NES and a compatible game cartridge. Console based retro-gaming became pretty much the preserve of collectors or anyone who hadn’t got around to throwing their old stuff away. The Wii’s virtual console lets you revisit classic games like Fatal Fury without having to dig out your old consoles from the loft.

Retro gaming is now the Videogaming industry that is the equivalent of the slow food movement. Today we are faced with increasingly complicated games that take even longer to play. While there is no denying the ever-evolving nature of the videogame industry, modern day software releases are still reliant on gameplay inspiration provided by retro offerings from years gone by. You can now operate in the controversial area of console emulation. The current generation of consoles use emulators to play their predecessor’s backlists; and that emulation has helped Nintendo bounce back to success. Enjoy your gaming.

My name is Peter and I believe that buying console games online from sites like http://www.ultimatevideogames.co.uk is quick, easy and enjoyable. Most homes now have a games console to pass the time away. For great games and consoles at great prices go to http://www.ultimatevideogames.co.uk. It has console games old and new to test mind, skill and co-ordination. Wii, Xbox360, PlayStation, Gameboy, Nintendo DS and PSP. Enjoy your gaming.
